Sunflowers in Garden, stage 4

Filed under: Birds in Nature drawing,colored pencil — Debbi @ 2:17 pm

Here is my drawing after another week of work.  This week my goal was to get all of the leaves done, which I was able to accomplish. I’m working on this drawing by doing the darker areas first and then the lighter ones.  Following this plan, the next part to work on will be the bird, and then last, the sky.  I have been using Prismacolor pencils and burnishing the completed areas as I go along.  This generates a lot of pencil dust which I then need to clean repeatedly with some tacky wall tape.

  1. Hi Debbi;
    It is looking increasingly lovely. I’m curious – what reds did you layer to achieve such vibrant and warm flowers?

  2. Hi Lynda,

    First I used Inktense pencils to lay down a light layer of color. If you put down too much of these pencils it gets too dark and you have nowhere to go from there. Then, specifically (all with Prismacolors), I started by layering in the darks with first, Dark Green and second, Black Cherry, then went over the entire area with Crimson Lake, then moved onto Scarlet Lake and then an even lighter red (forget the name). In some cases I added oranges and even some yellow on top. Then I went back and redefined the darks with more Dark Green and Black Cherry and in some cases Dark Brown or Sepia. Also, I used Grass Green in areas where I wanted some variation in the shadows.

    On the top left flower I used a bit of Terra Cotta, Pumpkin Orange and some Peach to tone down the reds and make the petals brownish. That’s just the reds. The flower interiors were an entirely different approach! Thanks for asking.
