More work on the Sharp-shinned Hawk

Another week of work (sort of) on the sharp-shinned hawk drawing.  I was in New York City from Friday evening until late Monday night, so it was really only a three day work week, with the presidential inauguration happening on Tuesday. Anyways, I’m happy with the work I did get done.  There’s a new leaf over the hawk, not floating down as I had originally envisioned, but I like what it adds all the same.  Tomorrow I’ll start on the leaf that’s going in below the hawk.  This drawing should be done soon!  I cropped out the glue smear in the photo, which is an accurate depiction of how the top of the drawing will look when it’s framed.  The bottom will have a little more space when the fourth leaf is added.

  1. That third leaf really adds depth to the drawing. Great development!

  2. Hi Alex, yes, I agree with you about the leaf adding depth. Now it needs another leaf in the foreground to break up the rectangular/horizontal feel just a bit.

  4. Thanks Gwen! It’s a gingko leaf, and the two leaves under the hawk are oak leaves, one is from a white oak and the other’s from a red oak. Almost done. . .

  5. Oh, a Gingko leaf.. Thanks.. I don’t believe we have them growing naturally in our area…

  6. I hope I didn’t come off as too nerdy pointing out the difference. . . I just love gingko leaves – they’re fan-shaped. They are so pretty to see lying all over the ground in the fall when they turn yellowy-green. They’re not very common around here, but my neighbor has a huge, mature gingko tree in her front yard, 3 houses down from ours! You may not have them where you live. I wonder if you do?!
