Balancing Act Finale

Balancing Act completed

Here is the finished version of “Balancing Act”.  I have actually grown to like the green paper and the way colors of the rocks look on it.  It was, however, very difficult to achieve certain colors with the green as a background – and difficult to create as many subtle gradations as is possible on the tan or blue backgrounds.  Any comments about this, or anything regarding the drawing, are most welcome!

Most of these drawings are approximately 9 x 12 (or 12 x 9) inches in size.  I’m going to start a smaller drawing in graphite on white paper of a stone with another object, and then return to working on the colored papers.

  1. I love what you’re doing with these beautiful rocks, Debbi! The green paper does lend a cool, natural feeling to whole thing, though I can understand the challenges it posed for you. Not surprisingly, you succeeded! (You have also reminded me that I need to get some green Pastelbord… I’ve been meaning to try it!)

  2. Thanks Liz. It’s nice to hear from you. I think the drawing works too. I’ll be curious to see your work on a green pastelboard. I’m glad you’re blogging again after such a long break!

  3. I think this turned out very nicely Debbi, and it sounds like you like it better than you originally thought you would. The deep shadows in it lend alot of depth. As with all your pieces, I sure wish I could see it ‘in person’!

  4. The green-ish paper gives the drawing an interesting effect. I like it. How did you get the rocks to balance on each other like that? I had my Tuesday morning class draw beach rocks on the UArt paper. They found it very challenging. I didn’t realize it would be so difficult for them. Looking forward to your next drawing!

  5. Lynda, isn’t that interesting that the shadows add depth…it’s such a “staged” little piece. I wish you could drop by my studio as well.

Kendra, I managed to balance the rocks as they all have flatter spots that will rest easier. The set-up tumbled, however, probably from my cat jumping up on the table. That’s interesting that your students had a hard time with drawing rocks. What was it about them that made it difficult?

  9. Thank you for visiting my site and your comments. These drawings are done in colored pencil. Do you take drawing lessons, or draw yourself?
