Latest Drawing is complete!

I think this drawing is finished! It’s larger (14.5 x 19.5 inches) and more finished than the previous drawings in the stones series, and I’m very happy with the outcome. I would probably still be working on the background had I not switched from paper to Rtistx board for a surface. I used a lot of watersolubles to lay down initial layers of color, and tried to let the variations (specifically in the background) show through for some movement and basically a less neat and/or perfect look. It was a lot of fun to draw the water in the bowl and what happens between the rocks and the lighting, which I may play around with in future pieces. But for now I think I’m going to move onto trying out some ideas in oils.
Debbi you have created the perfect combination of solid and liquid… I believe I could reach into that bowl and pick up one of those beach stones… and such a richness!!!

This is lovely Debbi, as I’ve said before. In addition to finding the color scheme so engaging, I love the subtle shadow and reflections to the left of the bowl.

Debbi, your pieces never cease to amaze me! Really, the lighting, contrast, and liquidity of the water are incredible. I love the colors too.

Hi Debbi. Wow! This is such an amazing series! Glad to see you running with it. I can just imagine all your rock pieces hanging together, making a powerful impact on the viewer. Can’t wait to see the next installment!

Thank you Gwen, Lynda, Holly and Kathy! I always appreciate your taking the time to check out my work and leave a comment.
Gwen, it’s so interesting to see how differently rocks react to water in terms of absorption and reflection.
Lynda, I really like the shadows to the left of the bowl as well. I think it really helps add drama and keeps the drawing from becoming boring.
Holly, you are such a great cheerleader! I always appreciate your comments. Hope you are doing well with the crazy move time.
Kathy, it’s definitely a hope of mine to have a show of this series. I hope you’re doing well and are able to get some work done now that your daughter is settled at school.

I came over from gwen’s blog and agree with her… your work is beautiful. Your painted stones are soft and solid at the same time… I love that you paint stones… and what is ice dancing? roxanne

Roxanne, thanks for stopping by and your comments! I am going to visit your blog now (so that is via Gwen as well, don’t you agree?).
Ice dancing is a discipline of figure skating where one executes dances on the ice with a partner. (There’s also freestyle (jumps, spins, footwork), moves in the field, and pairs skating (where a couple skate free style together). There are levels of dances that increase in complexity, going from Preliminary Dances up to the Gold Level, and then once one passes the Gold Level there are International Dances. You can watch some dances on youtube, search for either the Argentine Tango or the Westminister Waltz. Those would give you a good idea of what some gold dances look like. I’m sure you’ve seen ice dancing if you’ve watched the winter olympics on tv. I’m currently working on an International Dance called the Cha Cha Congelado. You can also go to the USFSA.org site and learn more. I hope this was helpful and not too wordy. Let me know!

The varying wetness of the rocks is wonderful. How some are completely dry on top, while still in the water, others are freshly wet, and the variation inbetween. I really love seeing the other works in the series that brought you to the last one. I am going to go look at the oil paintings to see if your newest stone series is there yet. See you on the ice!

My roommates both thought this was a photo at first . . . I think that’s all that needs to be said.

Hey Rob, thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment – even if I did force you to???? I appreciate it. Newest stone oil painting will not be on blog for probably another week.
Alex, I think a lot more could be said, but I always appreciate your taking time out of your busy schedule to stop in!

Beautiful! love the background too. Is the background just pencil or blended with solvent? I printed out your Rocks in Vase photo that I took at our chapter meeting to show to my colored pencil classes and they were blown away. I also showed them the Graphitint pencils so they would understand the differences in pencils. My Wednesday class is inspired to try drawing stones in next week’s class! Thank you for letting me share your drawing.

That’s great Kendra! I hope you’ll share some of their pencil drawings of stones on your blog.
The background is Inktense (Derwent) pencils blended with water, no solvent. The support is Rtistx, and they recommend that you NOT use solvents on their boards. Maybe it would eat away at it?
