Green Vase drawing is complete!
I am very excited to have this drawing at it’s completion! It’s actually been finished since the end of last week, but as usual, I have spent a little time tweaking it here and there to tidy up some edges and colors, etc. I particularly love the area where the rocks and water line meet and all of the complexities of those interactions. Now it’s on to trying to come up with a name for this piece. That’s one of my more challenging tasks. I usually end up using somewhat mundane sounding titles, basically they help me to know which piece it is, but I find it difficult to convey much more than that in a title. Any comments or suggestions from other artists out there?
I’m moving on quickly to a new piece, and will write more about that when it’s underway. Meanwhile, it’s been a busy spring with several shows going on in the New England area. Lapis Light was just accepted into the Connecticut Academy of Fine Art’s 99th Annual Juried Show, which is up at the Mystic Arts Center (Mystic, CT) from May 28th to July 17th. More information can be found at either of these websites: Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts or Mystic Arts Center.
One of my favorite little drawings, Nocturne at Sea, is currently hanging in the Academic Artists Association’s Annual Member’s Exhibition, and was awarded the “Art Patron’s Award”.
Happy upcoming summer to all, and thanks for checking out my blog!

Oh Debbi! This is absolutely breathtaking! I am speechless! What a perfectly executed painting! The green REALLY works against the stones!
Good luck on your shows and congratulations on your award! I wish I could help you out with a title for your piece but I am not one who is gifted in that area.

Debbi – I just love the green vase drawing! The shapes and colors are so interesting, and the execution is immaculate.
Congratulations on your exhibitions and award!

Debbi, I love this piece. There are so many fascinating areas where one can get lost inside: the water lines, the reflections, the colors, the textures… Beautiful!

A good name would be “Suck on this one, photographers!!!”
Stop drawing seriously you’re going to put photographers out of business. The world is already in enough trouble with oil spills, volcanos, forest fires, and sinkholes.

Thank you Dianna, Holly and Ester. I appreciate your checking in and feedback. I don’t think I’m seeing the piece with fresh eyes, and you all seem to really like it. Ester, it would be fun to see this piece along side your stones piece – I’d love to see how they relate to each other. Do you think you’re going to do any more pieces like the one that won first place in the CPSA “Explore This!”?
Okay, Alex, that is completely useless advice about a title. I’m actually not reproducing a photograph. I don’t usually show my working photographs, because I change the image so much and do a lot of invention. Maybe one of these days I’ll show a reference photo. C’mon, I love your stopping by, but you can do a better comment than that!

For sure, Debbi, I’m planning to do a lot more pebbles. I have just finished two small ones but they are for teaching purpose only (I won’t be able to post them right away). I’m looking forward to do larger ones in August after my workshop.I agree, I would love to see how our pieces relate to each other. I’m always intrigued by how artists can look at the same object and see different things.

lol I was joking that your drawings are so good that you will end up replacing photography; not that you were drawing from a photo.
I’ll try and think of a good title

Debbi, WOW! Absolutely gorgeous! The greens are beautiful. I especially love the water line and all of its intricacies. How about – “Glass Half Empty-Not!”. Just a suggestion.
Congratulations on the exhibitions and your award!
As always, looking forward to the next installment!

The more I look at it, the more peaceful I feel. How about “Peacekeeper?”
Ya know, like air force nuclear bombers from the Cold War

Alex, you are just too silly! Just when I think you’re going to leave something serious. . .
Kathy, thanks for the comments. It’s funny, when the vase was half done I kept saying to myself: “Well there’s a glass that’s half full!”. We think alike!

These are both so beautiful, Debbi! I also love those water-meets-air areas in the vase piece, and also the composition of the stones, with that great big one just under the surface, surrounded by the smaller ones. It’s the mother stone! And, then, your “Nocturne At Sea”, all delicate, lightweight, and iridescent… lovely!
(Is it time to start counting down days yet? :~)

Hi Liz, I really like that – “the mother stone”. Really like it. It’s true, too.
I’m going to start counting down when I return from our anniversary trip on July 4th. But I am very excited to be traveling to CA for the CPSA convention with you.

I love drawing of the vase of rocks! I read a previous post making reference to artists use of color as being ” a balancing act ” It’s true even for me when it comes to color in floral design. Your drawing is a fascinating piece of art! When I first stumbled upon it, I was thinking about our country & the underwater mortgage crisis, and I thought “underwater” as a title, but your piece made me feel so calm & full of hope, life truly is a “balancing act” Thanks for sharing your amazing work! It gave me a ton of hopeful inspiration!

Thank you so much for your comment! (Is your name Brittany, or is that just a business name?). I am glad that this drawing has a calm and hopeful effect on you. I think of them as being very zen-like to look at. Doing art with flowers can be so amazing – I’m sure you are an artist!
