The Bird is Next!!

Filed under: Birds in Nature drawing, colored pencil,Work in Progress — Debbi @ 3:20 pm

I wanted to post a photo of this stage of my current drawing – I’m almost finished with the tree stump and snow, and about ready to start on the dark-eyed junco.  This piece is about 19 x 13 inches in size, and I’m pleased with how quickly the detailed stump has gone.  I know I’ll have to go back and forth with the snow contours once the bird is in place, and tweak some of the bark areas and shadows.  It’s been interesting to draw  the detailed snow and stump areas of the foreground and the less focused snow and stump areas of the background.

  1. All I can say is you sure know how to handle a pencil!!!! I love how you executed the snow against the stump. As always, a beautiful job.

  4. Thanks Dianna – coming from you that’s quite a compliment. I’m enjoying the snow/stump interface as well. But I can already see areas to darken from having posted this pic on the blog. What are you working on these days?

Hey Lynda, thanks! I’m looking forward to seeing the progression on your galloping horses piece! (Bet you are too. .. ;)

And Alex, thanks – what can I say – there is only one shade of a white pencil. I also used French Gray 10%, Grayed Lavender, Slate Gray, Sienna Brown, Dark Umber, Cool Gray 70%, Lavender, Burnt Ochre, and other colors depending on what the wood was like in the specific area. (So you really wanted to know all that, right? :P )

  6. They will have a tough time making the explosives w/o the secret color. And even if they torture Ms. Friedman, they will not get the physical properties of the wood. ;)
