The Secret Life of Leaves
This is the third in my new trio of leaf drawings. It measures 9″ x 15″, done in colored pencil on Strathmore Bristol Board. I am really enjoying working on this series, if I can call it a series. I’m planning on doing a very different drawing next of a hawk on a snow-covered woodpile. But I’m sure I’ll return to this subject matter at some point in the future. I have an incredible trove of photographs I’ve been working from, taken a couple of years ago on a clear fall day after a very violent night storm. It knocked down leaves that hadn’t lost their vibrancy yet, and knocked down all at once leaves that usually fall at very different times. I’ll have to keep an eye out for a storm like that next autumn. For now, us New Englanders are just trying to survive this winter – it has been crazy with record snowfalls, ice storms, rain, and cold. Spring and Summer are looking really good right now!

Debbi, I think this is a very successful series and I’m sure you will return to it in time. I love the little surprises that one finds while traveling around your drawings: lost edges, water drops, a feather, dark corners with bright color spots that compliment the overall mood. Beautiful!

Hi Debbi! I also think this is a series you should come back to. Loving the different compositions and colors and the surprises Nature shares with us! As always the colors are just so rich. Enjoying looking at a season other than Winter! As beautiful as it can be, I’ve had enough! I can’t even see out my front window any more – the snow piles are so big!
On another note, I can’t wait to see the Rock/Candy show next month! Making every effort to get there.

Hi Ester and thanks for the feedback. I’m looking forward to visiting you and your studio in a couple of weeks!
Kathy, the colors in this one are actually a little more vibrant than they’re showing up in this photo, and I don’t know why. (This is the high-res jpeg my photographer sent me. . . so it’s much better than anything I take!) I’m with you on the snow – spring can’t come soon enough. I do hope to see you at the opening. Take care!

I am pleased to see another leaf artist! I have been drawing leaves for several years now in colored pencil and have a backlog of original photographs to work from.
